From ICQ to WhatsApp: A Short History
The 'uh-oh' sound, the buddy list, and the long road to a billion daily messages.

01 A Flower, a Pager, and Everything After
ICQ launched in November 1996 and changed what a computer felt like. Mirabilis, a small Israeli company, gave the world presence indicators — the simple idea that you could see whether someone was there before you typed. The flower logo, the unmistakable 'uh-oh' notification sound, the numbered UINs that users memorized like phone numbers: it was primitive by any modern measure, and it was electric. AOL bought Mirabilis in 1998 for around $287 million, and ICQ's influence bled directly into AIM, which became the dominant chat platform across North American schools and colleges through the late 1990s and early 2000s.
MSN Messenger launched in 1999, and for much of the world outside North America it was instant messaging — the thing you opened after school, the nudge you sent when you had nothing to say. Yahoo Messenger ran alongside it. Both services competed on features: winks, avatars, custom status messages. The buddy list as a social artifact was in full flower.
The shift came with the phone. BlackBerry Messenger gave smartphones a taste of closed, contact-based messaging around 2005. Then WhatsApp, founded by Jan Koum and Brian Acton in 2009, stripped everything back: no usernames, no buddy lists, just your phone number, your contacts, and a clean thread. It cost next to nothing, just a small flat annual fee,, it worked on every smartphone, and it crossed borders without SMS charges. Facebook acquired it in 2014 for approximately $19 billion.
WhatsApp now handles well over a hundred billion messages a day. ICQ, technically still alive, is a footnote. The arc from Mirabilis to Meta spans only a few decades — the entire history of instant messaging in a single career.
